His father used to play basketball with him when he was young, and he grew up to be 6’10” tall by the time he was in high school.

During his senior year of high school, he was elected to the All-American team for Boys Basketball.

Bill’s twin brother helped him get recognition among colleges, but he decided to go to college at the University of San Francisco instead of Duke because it had stronger academics and an affiliation with the Jesuit Order like his high school did.

Russell was drafted into the NBA by Ben Kerner in 1956, but he delayed joining the NBA because USF refused to let him play basketball there as well as in the NBA.

He eventually joined the Boston Celtics in 1957 and became an instant star player on the team. His presence helped them win their first game against the Philadelphia 76ers that same year even though none of their players had played together before then
