On March 30th, 1987 the New Orleans Superdome played host to the 1987 NCAA National Championship game between the #1 seed from the mid-west region, the Indiana Hoosiers and the #2 seed from the east region, the Syracuse Orangemen. Indiana beat UNLV in a 97-93 shootout to advance to the title game and Syracuse rolled in a 14 point victory over Providence for their right in the championship showdown. The championship game was Syracuseís first title game appearance in school history and it brought Indianaís title game total to five. This title game featured two coaches who today are two of the greatest in basketball history. Bobby Knight, coaching in his third championship game, and Jim Boeheim led their teams into the Superdome anticipating a magical night for their players, coaches and schools. The Indiana Hoosiers, led by Steve Alfordís 23 points, knocked off the Syracuse Orangemen 74-73 in the final seconds on a last second shot by Keith Smart, who was also named the tournaments Most Outstanding Player. Relive this historic match-up as the Indiana Hoosiers take on the Syracuse Orangemen in the 1987 NCAA National Championship game.
